" ... and you can kiss my ass!"
On the phones this evening a call to a guy, 19 years old, and apparently on a list of supporters we are calling at the moment to encourage to get involved in GOTV. I started the conversation with a line something along the lines of, “I understand you are a supporter of Barack Obama and so I’m calling you to find out if you would have time to volunteer during our GOTV,” to which he says, “let me tell you something about myself before we continue this conversation…”
I said, “sure.”
He goes, “I’m a military brat … what does a military brat mean to you?”
Although I knew where he was going I said that it didn’t mean anything in particular.
He goes, “it doesn’t, no … well it means I’m a republican and I would never support a democrat. My brother and my father are over in Iraq and your candidate wants to cut their funding, and I would like for you never to call my cell phone again and you can kiss my ass!”
I said that I appreciated the sacrifice his family was making, their service to this country, but that it is not true that Barack Obama wants to cut funding. He wants to end the war in Iraq. Withdraw our troops, fight the war where it needs to be fought.
But he was shouting at me from the other end of the line.
I said that I was sorry we were obviously not going to agree, I wished him all the best and said goodnight.
As I hung up the phone, I heard him go, “Oh I’m not finished … “
But I was. I had heard enough.
