Incredulous

Tonight. Cherso. A refugee camp in the far most reaches of northern Greece, close to the border. A man and his son trying to stay warm. It's 42 degrees and the temperature will drop to 35 degrees overnight. There is no heating in his tent nor in the tents of the approximately 240 families now staying there.

Colleagues of mine stayed overnight at Cherso last week. Just to see how cold it was. They replicated as much as possible the conditions all refugees at the site live through. They froze. One said that it was coldest around three o'clock in the morning. He could hear the children cry.

International Rescue Committee has been advocating for sites like Cherso to close and for refugees residing there to be moved to urban accommodation. There is no reason why refugees should need to endure the winter months in a tent.

This man has three children. "All small," he said. And looked at me, incredulous. The site celebrated its newest resident two days ago. A baby born in a hospital close by. A baby - a newborn - who will return to this.
