I’m just sayin’

From 2008 - 2009, I wrote a blog called “I’m just sayin,” my reflections and observations on the state of the world, with a particular focus on US politics. I worked at both the RNC and DNC conventions that year, and volunteered, and then worked on Barack Obama’s primary and presidential campaigns. There was much to write about. It’s all here, including, if you scroll down the page, “A Canvasser’s Diary,” my account of interactions I had with voters on their doorsteps in Columbus, Ohio in the final six weeks of the presidential campaign.

A canvasser’s diary

In 2008, I volunteered and then worked on Barack Obama’s campaign for the US presidency. I was a canvasser, going door to door, first during the primaries, in Philadelphia, PA, and Cleveland, OH, and then during the election campaign, when I spent 6 weeks in Columbus, OH. These short vignettes will give you a sense of the mood on the doorstep.

I am re-surfacing “A Canvasser’s Diary” at a time of incredible tumult in the US: an elderly wanna-be dictator and convicted felon is frothing at the doors of the White House with the US Supreme Court at his back. And, with just 100 days to run, a brilliant former prosecutor with an immigrant background could quite literally, save us all. Already I’m hearing similar comments to what I heard on the doorstep in 2008: the US is not ready for a woman, an African American woman at that. Familiar, these sentiments, but I, for one, am not convinced.

Here for you, “A Canvasser’s Diary, September to November 2008.”
